We have been putting Genevieve on the potty for a while now, and sometimes she goes, and sometimes she doesn’t. But we put her on before bathtime or just randomly if she asks. No pressure — just introducing her to it.
She is 2 years, 2 months old. At about this time, Jack also showed some interest, but I had a brand new baby at home, so we kind of ignored it. Still, he was trained by about 2 and a half.
So I knew this day was coming with her.
Yesterday, when I picked her up from school, her teacher told me she had underpants on — over a diaper — because she FREAKED out and demanded underpants. They have a few kids who are potty-training, and they think she is just super interested. And they said if we’re ready, they’re ready.
So, here we go.
I took her to school today with four pairs of Dora underpants, four pairs of Jack’s old sweatpants and a few pull-ups.
We generally subscribe to the potty-training method of going straight to underpants, no pull-ups, but I brought a few anyway. First of all, pull-ups are like four times as expensive as diapers. So why would I switch from cheap diapers to expensive pull-ups? No thanks. I’d rather do a load of laundry every day.
But this also means you basically are glued to the house for a while. Philip is on board, which is good because he will be hard-core potty-training the next few days while he’s home. And then this weekend, I’m already altering my plans — looks like we’ll be staying in.
When we potty-trained Jack, it was spring, so we took our little potty out in the driveway when we were playing, etc. It’s a little cold for that now, of course.
It would be great to get Viv out of diapers — save some money, get rid of the changing table, etc.
So, we’ll see.
So far, the worst part is her insistence on taking ALL her clothes off every time she sits on the potty. When you are working on this, you need to take them EVERY time they ask. So in the span of like 15 minutes this morning, I sat her on the potty and got her completely dressed three times. I seriously was like, ugh, let’s just stick with diapers! Yay diapers! I’m so lazy.
But she’s ready, I think. Or we’re ready to try.
And I’m glad I found a big bottle of carpet cleaner for the many times I’m going to need it over the next month or so.
